As a part of OPERA America's National Opera Week celebration (October 26–November 3, 2013), Opera Theater will host the 2013 Mildred Miller International Voice Competition on Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd in Pittsburgh. The competition is designed to identify and reward professional and pre-professional singers aged 35 years and younger.
The initial pool of applicants will be pre-screened, with 20 singers to be selected and invited to Pittsburgh for the semi-final competition round on Saturday, November 2nd. The panel of judges, which includes Mildred Miller Posvar, Robert Chafin, Marianne Cornetti, Robert Croan, Kevin Glavin, Eugene Perry, and Maria Spacagna, will select five singers to perform in the final round before a live audience at 3:00pm on Sunday the 3rd, at Mellon Institute Auditorium in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Each singer will be given a fifteen minute slot in which to sing two or three numbers: the first a number of their own choosing, the second one of their own or the judges’ choosing, and a possible third that could be requested by the judges.
The panel of judges will select winners for three prizes:
All three winners are awarded a base cash prize (the first amount in the prizes listed above). In addition, winners are offered an optional and negotiable contract to sing an appropriate solo role during Opera Theater’s 2014 SummerFest (the second amount on the prize list). Winners who choose to accept the contract may also participate in Opera Theater’s Summer Resident Artists Program on a full scholarship.
Competitors are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses to attend semi-finals and finals in Pittsburgh.
