Middle and High School Education Program 2014
The primary project will be in conjunction with a new production, designed specifically for students, of Lukas Foss' 1949 opera, The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The opera is based on the beloved short story by Mark Twain.
This production offers a superb introductory opera for young audiences and a natural vehicle for cross-curricular exploration of art, literature, and American history The student performances will take place at the Father Ryan Arts Center in McKees Rocks on February 26, 27, and 28, 2014. The opera will then be revived as part of the company’s summer festival offerings in June 2014, with a performance each Saturday of the festival at 11:00 am. Don't miss this great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy opera together!
The Education Program will comprise the following:
Opera Theater has created a study guide for teachers, offering suggestions and information for cross-curricular exploration of the themes and material touched on in The Jumping Frog, including art, literature, American history, and folk legends of the Gold Rush era. Download the study guide [PDF, 7.2 MB]
Opera Theater will provide elementary, middle, and high schools with classroom visits prior to the production, presenting excerpts of the work with a singer and pianist to students.
Free student matinees will take place at 9:30 and 11:00 am, Wednesday through Friday, February 26, 27, and 28. Prior to the performances the director will give a talk to students, and the performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the artists.
